When we set out on a journey, there’s usually a purpose. Life is no different. But how many of us know our life’s purpose?
It’s a question posed by Canadian Lucy MacDonald (pictured), counsellor, life coach, speaker and author of titles that include Learn to Make Time, Learn to Manage Your Time and Learn to Be an Optimist.
Lucy believes that when we have purpose, we start every day with that in mind and plan accordingly. It shapes how we think, what we do, how we spend our time and how we approach our life.
She said: “Living your life purpose is at the heart of who you are – the very essence of your being. Living a purposeful life provides you with a sense of direction and mission.
“Writing a personal statement of purpose or “mission statement” will clarify the direction you should take in life. It will help you stay focused when your enthusiasm wanes and at any time when you're using your precious time on inconsequential trivia”.
Lucy gives us the formula: your life purpose = your passion + its benefits to others and shares her way of identifying and encapsulating purpose within a personal mission statement as follows:
START WITH YOUR PASSION. It could be anything from singing opera to DIY to bungee-jumping. Take a look at your personal values.
NOW ASK YOURSELF: what do my friends and family ask my advice about? Do my friends see me as having expertise in a specific area? When I enter a bookstore, do I always gravitate to a specific section like gardening, physical fitness or travel?
CONSIDER WHO WILL BENEFIT from your passion. Are you interested in sharing it with a specific group or profession or people in general? Finally, how will others benefit? For example, if your passion is showing others how to find their work-life balance, possible benefits will be that they get to enjoy more time with their children.
LOOK AT YOUR ANSWERS then write a clear and concise mission statement based on the following sentence stems? My passion is…, The main beneficiaries of my sharing of this passion will be … They will benefit by …
Refer to you statement whenever you need to remind yourself what is meaningful in life.
